Furthering Our Wood Investigations

Last week we continued in our wood study with an investigation that looked at wood shavings, saw dust and sandpaper. We investigated what was similar and different between wood chips and sawdust. We thought about how each was made and where we might find each. We hypothesized what would happen if we mixed them together and recorded what happened when we did. After observing this we added both these materials to water and observed what happened. We decided that we wanted to remove the materials from the water and used a strainer to do this.

Following this we all got a piece of wood and some sandpaper. We went to town on the wood with the sandpaper and were able to change how the wood looked. We rubbed and rubbed the wood with the sandpaper and we noticed that the once sharp corners were becoming rounded. We also noticed quite a bit of wood dust from all the sanding we were doing on our plates. Pretty cool to learn all this neat stuff about wood. Here are some pictures from our investigations:

Coming up in the next couple weeks we plan on using glue, nails and hammers. Stay tuned to see what we create!
