Symmetry

We've been discussing symmetry a bit and have done a few activities surrounding this concept. After a discussion on what symmetry was and how we could determine whether something was symmetrical or not we used our Smartboard to create shapes. Once we created a shape we tried to draw a line of symmetry through it. We found that some shapes do have lines of symmetry, some don't, and some have more than one line of symmetry.

After working on our Smartboard we decided to get our hands dirty and make some symmetry paintings. To do this we took a piece of paper and folded it in half to make a line down then middle. We then unfolded it to make paper flat again. We then used paint to make a design on only one side/half of our paper. We then took the blank side of the paper and folded it over the painted side and pressed the two sides tightly together. The result was a symmetrical painting!

The next day we decided to try and find symmetrical shapes in and around our school. We found some cool things that were both man made and some that occur in nature.  Here are some of the items we found that are symmetrical.

Next we thought it would be cool to try and make some symmetrical paintings without folding the paper in half on itself but rather trying to create a mirrored image using purely our own painting skills. WOW! Did our "free style" symmetry paintings turn out cool or what!
